Solitary Shell, by Dream Theater

January 28th, 2009

Somehow I feel this song appeals very strongly to me. It seems to describe a lot of the feelings I have and have had. It has such a happy tune, yet the lyrics are really sad.

He seemed no different from the rest
Just a healthy, normal boy
His mama always did her best
And he was daddy’s pride and joy

He learned to walk and talk on time
But never cared much to be held
And steadily he would decline
Into his solitary shell

As a boy he was considered somewhat odd
Kept to himself most of the time
He would daydream in and out of his own world
But in every other way, he was fine

He’s a monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell

Temporary catatonic
Madman on occasion
When will he break out
Of his solitary shell?

He struggled to get through his day
He was helplessly behind
He poured himself onto the page
Writing for hours at a time

As a man, he was a danger to himself
Fearful inside most of the time
He was drifting in and out of sanity
But in every other way, he was fine

He’s a monday morning lunatic
Disturbed from time to time
Lost within himself
In his solitary shell

A momentary maniac
With casual delusions
When will he be let out
Of his solitary shell?

Electret microphone preamp

December 14th, 2008

I recently bought a Sennheiser PC 121 headset for skypeing, before realizing that macs don’t provide bias voltage to electret microphones, and takes line level signal rather than mic level. Phooey. So I decided to build an electret microphone preamp, using the circuit I found here.

My DIY electret microphone preamp. Sadly doesn't work as expected.

If you ask me it looks kind of cool, but sadly, it is so noisy (it picks up noise from the floor lamp across the room) and the signal is so weak, that I can’t use it. Fixing the issues with the box would cost too much, I might as well just buy a Griffin iMic at this point, or a USB headset.

The graph I expected to see from blowing directly at the microphone.

Hi again.

December 13th, 2008

I’m not sure I want to use Wordpress again, but it would be the simplest solution. Until it gets hacked again, that is.

Maybe if I feel like it, once the finals are over, I’ll try and build my own thing, but if not then I guess this is what I’ll use.

Oh and uh, happy holidays. :)
